How an ATS reads a resume
An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is a tool used to sort, rank, and search for candidates. It doesn't "see" your resume the way you do: it extracts text, tries to identify sections (experience, education, skills), and then compares certain terms to your target job.
The 3 reading steps of an ATS:
- Parsing (extraction): the system retrieves the text and attempts to structure it.
- Section detection: it looks for standard headings and a clear hierarchy.
- Matching: it compares the resume's vocabulary to a job/industry (skills, tools, titles).
Exactly what CVTeaser analyzes
CVTeaser focuses on the signals that make a difference in automated sorting.
1 - ATS compatibility & parsing
- PDF readability (selectable text vs "image" export)
- Simple structure (avoiding columns/tables that break reading logic)
- Logical flow of information (experience, education, skills)
2 - Structure & detected sections
- Presence and clarity of sections (Experience, Education, Skills...)
- Standard headings vs unrecognized "creative" titles
- Hierarchy (titles, subtitles, dates, locations)
3 - Keywords & relevance
- Expected vocabulary based on your target job/industry
- Missing or misplaced keywords
- Vague or misaligned job titles
4 - Recruiter readability
A resume shouldn't just "pass a robot": it must also convince a human. We therefore verify:
- Clarity of results (impact, numbers, action verbs)
- Consistency of career path and dates
- Overall readability (density, structure, relevance signals)
Why a good resume must pass 2 readings: ATS + human
Many candidates optimize "by intuition": design, length, phrasing... but forget that the first barrier is often automatic.
Our principle:
- First: make the resume readable and interpretable by an ATS.
- Then: make the content convincing for a recruiter.
An effective resume is one that reaches the recruiter, then converts into an interview.
What you get in your CVTeaser report
- ATS Score /100: A clear score + a breakdown of factors influencing your ATS pass rate (structure, readability, parsing, keywords).
- Recruiter Readability Score /20: Estimation of "human reading" clarity: hierarchy, density, impact, 10-second comprehension.
- "ATS Parsing" Diagnosis: We show you if your resume is correctly "read": detected sections, extracted fields, risks linked to columns/tables, image PDFs, etc.
- Detected sections (and missing ones): Verification of standard headings (Experience, Education...) and common errors that make information disappear.
- Missing / misplaced keywords: Identification of terms expected for your job/industry + those you are missing (tools, hard skills, job titles, synonyms).
- Skills ↔ Job matching: An overview of the alignment between what your resume "claims" and what the job requires (vocabulary gaps, vague titles).
- Top 3 critical blockers (prioritized): The 3 issues costing you the most points, explained simply: what the ATS understands, why it blocks, where it is located.
- Auto-rejection risks: Shortlist of "high risk" elements (PDF format, columns, date inconsistencies, unrecognized sections, graphic overload).
- Career consistency: Detection of common inconsistencies that drop credibility: unexplained gaps, mixed date formats, overlaps.
- "Invisible" impact: Spotting areas where your resume looks like a task list (few action verbs, few results, lack of concrete proof).
- Quick wins (10–15 min actions): Simple and fast corrections that often boost the score: structure, titles, order, phrasing, sections.
- Optimization plan: A mini roadmap: what to fix first, what to improve next, and what is optional.
- Industry recommendations: Style and content adjustments based on your context (e.g., finance more sober, tech more stack/tools, sales more numbers).
- Final summary "key takeaways": In 5 lines: what blocks you, what helps you win, and the recommended next step.
